WASHINGTON — President Trump conveyed a message of unity on Monday when
he addressed the nation to share his sadness and offer prayers for those killed or
injured in Las Vegas in one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history.
“My fellow Americans, we are joined today in sadness, shock and grief,” Mr.
Trump said, the morning after a gunman opened fire at a music festival in Las Vegas,
killing more than 50 people and injuring hundreds more.

“It was an act of pure evil,” Mr. Trump said.

The president’s remarks about unity, made from the Diplomatic Room at the
White House, came at a time when the president has seized on divisions over other
issues.

“In moments of tragedy and horror, America comes together as one. And it
always has,” Mr. Trump said. “We call upon the bonds that unite us, our faith, our
family, and our shared values. We call upon the bonds of citizenship, the ties of
community, and the comfort of our common humanity.”

Earlier Monday, Mr. Trump offered his “warmest condolences” in a Twitter
post.

Law enforcement officials said the gunman killed himself Sunday night after he
opened fire on a country music festival from his hotel room at the Mandalay Bay
Resort and Casino.
