More on soccer/calcio ...

I note that one of my postings on this minor blog received quite a large number of visitors -- the posting being on soccer.

During my daily jogs in Rock Creek Park in the imperial capital I see children playing soccer.

Actually, they are not "playing" soccer at all. They are being taught how to play soccer by well-meaning upper middle class adults.

All the necessary tools for "playing" soccer are there for the kids to "enjoy" -- name these tools, ranging from plastic goal stands to fancy soccer shoes. And adults teaching them how to play.

Poor kids. Being "taught" to play.

Part of my childhood was spent in Italy (58-62). There I saw kids really playing soccer -- real calcio. No adults around. Just a bunch of kids really playing, with a lousy-looking ball.

Soccer will never "take" in the USA if adults meddle with how kids should play it.
