A Facebook exchange on Poland/Ukraine/Russia (doubttless it will be continued) -- worth considering

Just bumped into Timothy Garton Ash in an Oxford salon, where we were both getting our hair cut at the same time… TGA of the "Putin MUST be stopped" article in The Guardian, in which he advocates arming Ukraine with weaponry sufficient to take on Russia militarily. He casually mentioned that he was on his way to Belarus and Ukraine this week, whereupon I said, for the sake of global peace and the continuation of human life on the planet, I hoped he wouldn't try to stage a similar coup in Minsk as was orchestrated in Kiev last year. To which TGA replied that he hopes that is exactly what will happen in Minsk... and looked at me as though I was the extremist radical freak on the lunatic fringe... My teenager Katya, who only heard the words 'Minsk', 'Kiev' and 'Moscow', rolled her eyes at me and said: "oh god, Mum, why do you always have to get involved?? You are SO weird…" smile emoticon

The time for diplomacy will come again, but it is not now: Ukraine urgently needs military support, and a counter to Russian propaganda

  • Daniel ODonoju If there is a coup, you will probably have a lifetime regret you didn't put a scissors in his heart when you had the chance. Maybe next time, tell him to bring HIS children to the artillery zone so they can reap the consequences of his beliefs, not just innocent Ukrainians and NovoRussians. Arrogant twats like him can no longer be tolerated.

  • John Brown Had the pleasure of having very interesting conversations with Timothy while posted at the U.S. Consulate Krakow (86-90) and U.S. Embassy Belgrade (95-98). His observations about Poland were in my modest opinion (from my "on the scene" perspective) the best accounts of that courageous country at that time in the Western media.

  • Thomas Dunn By the way, his real name is Weinstein.
  • Ben Aris I have a solution to this problem: for every analyst or academic that says we should send guns to Ukraine it should be made a condition that they also go and join in the fighting personally. That way they will be a little less quick to put other people's lives on the line I'm sure.

  • Robert Michael Reddicks Oh, it's just their old money maker. They never go and their ilk never dies.
  • Tina Jennings John Brown I could not disagree more with you about Anne Applebaum. Her views are absolutely shocking; she was in fact the first commentator to voice the view last year (in the Spectator) that conventional warfare in Europe would be just fine and dandy, and we should all "get over" the taboo about the idea that it shouldn't be allowed to happen again... Don't get me started on her here, I post about her regularly. If she ends up as First Lady of Poland, Europe is finished. In my opinion, Applebaum is a raving lunatic, and makes Ed Lucas sound like Mahatma Gandhi.

  • John Brown Tina -- Thank you for your kind response. Your observation deserves far more than more than an "immediate" Facebook "reaction." Best, john
