Public Diplomacy as a Global Phenomenon: Symposium in Japan

Symposium on Public Diplomacy: Nov. 5: The Popularity of Nations: How and Why Governments Seek Public Approval Abroad - nippon.com

On November 5, 2013, the Nippon Communications Foundation and the German Friedreich-Ebert-Stiftung will jointly host their third annual international symposium in Tokyo. This year’s event will explore the importance of a positive international public image to nations today, as well as strategies for building such images. Participants from around the world will offer ideas on the role of public diplomacy in the foreign policies of their own nations. Where has soft power worked, and where it has not?

We are proud to invite Dr. Kent Calder, director of the Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies and director of the Japan Studies Program at Johns Hopkins University, to present the keynote speech, “Soft Power and Diplomacy.” Three discussion sessions will follow:

The Importance of Public Diplomacy
The Instruments of Public Diplomacy
Public Diplomacy in East Asia

Panelists for the discussion sessions will include:

Najib El-Khash (Syria; journalist)
Holger Finken (Germany; Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst)
Lily Gardner Feldman (USA; Johns Hopkins University)
Kwon Yongseok (South Korea; Hitotsubashi University)
Mao Danqing (China; Kobe International University)
Ogoura Kazuo (Japan; former president of the Japan Foundation)
