Excerpt:The immigration section of the president’s speech was awful. It included some grace notes about legal immigrants enriching the nation, but what followed makes one wonder if he believes that. Arguably, Mr. Trump was simply trying to put political pressure on the Democrats to fund his border wall. Past some point, though, the catalog of immigrant criminality and threat started to sound like something else.
What used to be an argument for enforcing our laws and securing the border is close to tipping into ethnic animosity. Hispanic-surnamed voters might reasonably begin to wonder where they stand in Mr. Trump’s America. Is the message that we should keep some of them out, or all of them out? ...
