HONOLULU, June 25 [2016] (UPI) -- Hawaii became the first state Friday to enact a law to place gun owners into a centralized information system.
Hawaii Governor David Ige signed a series of three gun control laws including Senate bill 2954 which authorizes police departments to enroll firearms applicants and owners into an FBI criminal record monitoring system also known as a "rap back" system.
"This will allow county police departments in Hawaii to evaluate whether the firearm owner may continue to legally possess and own firearms," Ige's office said in a statement, according to CNN.
Honolulu Police Department Maj. Richard Robinson wrote a letter to the state House in March stating there were no further checks after the initial background check for gun owners under the previous law.
"As a result, the county police departments have no way of knowing if a current Hawaii firearm owner has been convicted of a crime in another state that would prohibit him or her from owning a firearm," he said.
Ige also signed HB 625 and HB 2632 which disqualify convicted stalkers and people with significant behavioral, emotional or mental disorders from owning firearms.
"This is about our community's safety and responsible gun ownership," Ige said in a statement. "This system will better enable our law enforcement agencies to ensure the security of all Hawaii residents and visitors to our islands."
