The abandonment of the verb "to say" ...


As we Americans use live speech less and less as a mode of communication -- the real spoken word being replaced by virtual social media interaction -- the verb "to say" seems to be disappearing from our language.


Take, as one of many examples, the recent monologue of Jimmy Fallon, the late-night show host:
“I heard Great Britain is planning to add a picture of Jane Austen to their currency. Americans are like, ‘I wonder when a woman will be on our currency?’ Then Hillary was like, ‘Soon.’”
