A facebook exchange on Ukraine -- "nation" vs. [?] state (slightly edited)

  John Brown S [...] -- Is not a key question -- not answered by my limited reading of the scholarly/journalistic literature -- defining the distinction between state and nation (or "statehood" vs. "nationhood"). I don't think this question is as important in the USA as it is in Europe, a continent at war with itself for centuries. Don't we Americans assume that our "nation" is our "state"? Granted, we had a terrible civil war, but the United States (for most Americans today, I'd say), is synonymous with the "American nation." Not so sure about parts of Europe, especially those under domination by empires/vampires/oligarchs for eons, arguably starting with the Vikings dominating parts of what is now known as "Eastern Europe."
