The 13th-century Ebstorf map was rediscovered in a convent in Ebstorf, Germany, around 1830. Its creator, probably associated with the Ebstorf monastery, superimposed the body of Christ and depicted atypically realistic islands and rivers. He also populated the map's margins with monsters. The original was destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II.
